Chapter 12

“By God.” The raven hair was matted to a forehead. It had been quite some time since the tall woman had been able to be intimate with her soulmate. The petite woman slowly slid her naked body the entire length of her lover. A blonde head, with equally sweat drenched locks, leaned against a scar cover shoulder. As always, the smaller woman kissed the scar. “You don’t have to do that, Eziquel.” It was a man’s name she used, but the blonde was all woman.

The reason Eziquel had once again kissed the shoulder was the same reason she always did. She was the one who had caused the scar, many moons ago. The Civil War had taken its toll on everyone, but it had also given something the young woman had never thought she would gain. When she had first saw Natan, it had been through the sights at the end of her musket. What was more shocking than being attracted to a man for the first time ever was the fact her quarry was all woman.

“I know. I still feel guilty.” Before her lover could respond, Eziquel continued. “We were fighting for what we believed in. We were fighting for a better world.” A strong hand was in blonde hair, pressing their naked bodies closer together. “I just happened to be in a better position.” Now two strong arms wrapped around her. How she wished things could be different. But both were most comfortable presenting themselves as men, warriors.

“Don’t.” Natan squeezed her lover, wishing they could be together like this. Not just making love, though that was extremely nice. It was simply being together, as two soulmates should. While there was nowhere she would rather be, time was getting away from them. She didn’t want to spend their time rehashing what had happened during the war. She wanted to spend it making love or speaking of other times. The fact they knew they had loved one another in other times and would continue until the end of time.

Eziquel sighed heavily. Her real name was Eliza. She had taken her brother’s name shortly after he, along with her parents, had died of the fever when she was ten and he was eight. Since none of her family had known what she looked like, posing as her brother when she had come to live with her aunt and uncle had been easy. And since she was practically a man, they had given her certain liberties a girl would not have received. “I just want you to know, you are safe with me.”

Natan, real name Natalie, chuckled softly. Anyone seeing them, whether dressed as women or men, would think she was the stronger of the two. That she was the protector. Ever since she’d been shot during the war, it was her Eziquel who had been the caregiver. It was a role reversal for the slightly older woman whose tale was similar. Only it was her younger brother who had been killed in a hunting accident.
